The Jemez (pronounced Hay-Mus) is located in the mountains of Northern New Mexico. We are surrounded by the Valles Caldera National Preserve, the Santa Fe National Forest, Bureau of Land Management land, and the Pueblos of Jemez and Zia. The elevation extends from around 6000 feet on up to over 10,000 feet. There is very little private land available, but plenty of land to enjoy, hiking, camping, and trout fishing. Wildlife abounds in the area. Deer, huge elk herds, mountain lions, foxes, lots of birds (including birds of prey), and black bears share the area with us. Oso Realty is named after the bears in the area, because bear is Oso in Spanish.
We enjoy beautiful rainy summers with thunder and lightning, golden aspen and cottonwoods in the fall, snow in the winter, and beautiful flower-filled spring days. Many people live here full-time and either commute into Los Alamos (home of Los Alamos National Laboratory) or into Rio Rancho and Albuquerque. The area is also sought after by people seeking weekend retreats, and mountain cabins are much sought after. There are around 4000 residents, both full-time and part-time.
The skies are clear and blue and the sunrises and the sunsets are gorgeous. The night skies are unobstructed and the stars and moon are fabulous to watch around an evening campfire. The area is known for its many small rivers (Jemez River, East Fork, Rio Cebolla, San Antonio), Fenton Lake, the Gilman Tunnels, multiple hot springs, high desert trails, and pine and aspen forests. We have several religious components (huge Zen Center, Baptist, Presbyterian, and Catholic churches) a library, 2 small motels, an adorable mountain convenience store, a liquor store, lots of nightly rentals, and a few cafes. We also have really nice people.
